Pho Nhuan - Vancouver, BC

Passed by this area on the way to Superstore next door. It was lunch time and my tummy was calling for food. So we decided to give it a try.

The establishment is located almost at the corner of Rupert and Grandview Highway. Not sure if there is any parking in rear. Most likely it is just street parking. We were going to Superstore so we parked there and walked over. Inside was tiny and could fit around 36 people if everyone sitting tightly. One thing I appreciated was the AC unit and another fan blowing the air around. It was a hot day and having AC in the building was a blessed.

We ordered a rare beef noodle soup with pork skewer on the side and a dry noodle with seafood. They did have our usual of spring roll on the menu but I decided to try something different. And that pork skewer of $3.50 turned out to be memorable.

My beef pho was passable. The broth was darker but I couldn't quite taste any star anise or other spices in it. I was expecting it to have a hint of star anise. The broth was pretty good and not MSG laden. I ordered a small size and it was just the right size for me. Good proportion of beef and noodle.

The dry noodle was made with yellow noodle but I think there was an option of rice noodle as well. For you who are not familiar with dry noodle, it's basically noodle with topping served with the soup separated. This type of noodle normally carried stronger flavor since the soup is separated. The yellow noodle was the wide flat noodle. Topping was squid, imitation crab, lettuce, onion, green onion and fried shallot. There was some dark sauce at the bottom of the bowl and you are supposed to mix all those together before digging in. I normally skip the soup since it doesn't have much flavor anyway. Same case over here as well.

The pork skewer came on a small plate with no skewer ! But it looked like the meat was actually removed prior to serving. The meat was well marinated with a hint of lemon grass. We both enjoyed this though I would think some may consider this skewer a bit dry. But lean meat is healthier, right ?

All in all we enjoyed the meal and will keep this place in mind when we are in the area.
