Green Leaf - Vancouver
We have not been to too many sushi place since we settled down in Vancouver. This time we invited some friends out and asked for recommendation and they suggested this place. So that's where we met on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Not sure what time they actually open but when we got there around 11:45 it's already open and seemed pretty busy already. Since our friends have not yet arrived we were not allowed to wait inside. Understandable since the place wasn't that big. It's a small and cozy place.
Later on we got a table by the window which was perfect since it allowed plenty of natural lights for taking pictures. Their menu was pretty big and offered quite a lot of selection even for vegetarians. We ordered tuna and salmon sashimi, a few type of aburi sushi and the kimchi bacon ishiyaki.
The tuna and salmon sashimi was fresh. The kimchi bacon ishiyaki was essentially Korean dolsot bibimbab. Dolsot bibimbab is a mixed rice, veggies and mixed served on a heated ceramic bowl. Because the bowl was preheated it will seared the rice and created some crunchy texture for the rice. This kimchi bacon ishiyaki was tasty and had a good combination of kimchi and bacon and just the right amount of seared crunchy rice. Unfortunately I think for the price of $10.95 I was expecting a bigger size.
We ordered three types of aburi sushi - kani ume oshi sushi, yuzu chasu oshi sushi and hotate oshi sushi. First one was made with real dungeness crab and prawn. Second one was made with pork belly and last one was with scallop. All of the aburi sushi was tasty. Aburi sushi in a nutshell is flamed seared sushi. In this case it's also oshi sushi which means box sushi which makes them looking more boxy than like regular hand shape nigiri sushi. And because it was actually seared the sushi has additional smoky flavor which makes you feel like eating barbecue sushi. Delicious.
On the other hand, the two types of roll sushi that we ordered was just okay. We got red dragon roll and spicy tuna roll. Red dragon roll got cucumber and maybe imitation crab with some tuna topping generous amount of spicy mayo (which wasn't really spicy) and crunchy tempura crumbs. The spicy tuna roll got tuna inside the roll and a big dollop of orange color mayo. I wasn't impressed with any of the rolls. Too much mayo in my opinion. A bit of tuna would complement the roll but too much of it just overwhelming the whole combination.
All in all was pretty good. If we go back I would just concentrate more on the aburi oshi sushi. I think they do better on that.
