So Hyang Korean Cuisine - Vancouver, BC

Came across this restaurant when I was researching restaurant to take a friend out for lunch. The plan got changed but I thought this restaurant has interesting menu. So we decided to go there ourselves. They open from 11:30 all the way to closing around 9:30. I guess the location on Fraser does invite people to stop by for late lunch/early dinner.

We walked in around 2 pm and they were still sort of busy. We were seated right away and offered drinks. We decided on a kimchi jun (kimchi pancake) and a hot pot stew (bul lak jeongol).

It took about more than ten minutes for the food to be prepared. We got our kimchi pancake first. It was thin, savory and very tasty. We never had any kimchi pancake before so we got nothing to compare that to. But it was yummy and we enjoyed it. Though it had a chili sign next to it on the menu but it was not spicy at all. I think if you could take kimchi, it's not spicier than kimchi. Though our waitress did ask about the spiciness level.

For the hot pot stew a portable stove was set up on the table. Then a flat pot was brought out with all the delicious contents in it : tofu, octopus, beef, etc. The fire on the stove was lit up to heat up the pot. Then our waitress used the scissors provided to cut up the octopus in smaller pieces. She also told us that we could enjoy the octopus in one minute (as to not overcooking it because they'll turn chewy).

While waiting for the hot pot to warm up some more, rice and the side dishes (ban chan) were brought out. There were four types of ban chan - kimchi, potato, bean sprout and fish cakes. They were all nicely presented on a small tear drop shape dish. The ban chan were all tasty especially the kimchi. It's well seasoned.

The hot pot stew I found it a bit lack of flavor. The broth used was not very deep flavor. I think it should be more beefy taste but it wasn't. Also it seemed that it was missing more greens like green onions maybe.

Anyway, we would probably go back to try their pork bone soup (gam ja tang) and see how that one fares. Their service was very attentive though. Our waitress came back to check on us a couple of times. And offered to refill our side dishes as well. That's very sweet of her.
