My Chau - Vancouver, BC
Found out this place serves chicken pho and decided to give it a try. It's located on Kingsway and King Edward. Parking a bit tricky since there were only a handful spots at the back of restaurant. We ended up parking near a park about two blocks away.
When we got there it was lunch time and it seemed that they were sort of swamped looking at a few tables that haven't been cleaned. We were seated immediately but didn't get the menu until about five minutes later. We noticed another table next to us also waiting for their order to be taken. But once we placed our order the food came out in decent time.
We shared spring roll which turned out to be deep fried spring roll. I misunderstood the menu and thought it was goi cuon which is made with rice flour with lettuce, rice noodle, pork and shrimp. Their spring roll was made with rice flour but contained rice noodle, shredded carrot and (maybe) minced pork ? The roll was served with sweet salty sauce made with fish sauce, chili sauce and lime. I liked that the roll came pre-cut to bite size and it's still piping hot.
My chicken pho was not the deep fried chicken served with noodle soup. I did find out ahead that they are popular for the deep fried chicken serves with noodle soup. But the one I wanted to try is the Northern style chicken pho which is pho noodle soup with chicken broth and chicken meat in the soup. My noodle soup came with lots of topping, sliced chicken meat, meat ball and quail eggs. The chicken meat used was dark meat so it was less drying. The chicken broth was not oily but it didn't taste much like chicken flavor. Another disappointment. My search for the perfect bowl of chicken pho continues.
Hubby ordered the hu tieu and egg noodle mix dry with soup on the side. It came with toppings like shrimp and deep fried fish cake. The egg noodle was very al dente to the point of very chewy. The noodle was seasoned with some sort of sweet savory dark sauce. It was pretty good. But we tried a different version with minced pork, shrimp and regular fish cake before and we liked that version better. Of course I think that version used pork lard.
All in all the food was decent but not exactly what I was expecting especially the chicken pho. Most likely we won't be going back since Vancouver now is not short of Vietnamese noodle place anymore.
