Another weekend of testing out local pho. I am still searching for that blow my mind away chicken pho. So far the one that came pretty close was one in Steveston. I am hoping to find one in Vancouver. But of course if I do crave chicken pho I don't mind going all the way down there.
This pho place is located almost at the corner of Granville and No. 3 Road. Small parking area available at the rear of the restaurant. Front door didn't look like it's used that often since no parking is allowed on No.3 road. Hubby made a comment that inside looks like an English pub. Or maybe the establishment was a pub prior.
I ordered chicken pho, hubby got the special dry noodle with soup on the side. We also got a rice dish with grilled lemon grass pork and steam crepe for appetizer.
The food came out in decent time. The steam crepe was made of rice flour sheet with minced pork and sliced wood ear. It was served with sliced Vietnamese sausage (not sure what it's made of). Sauce provided was a mixture of fish sauce, sugar and lime juice. It's similar to the sauce for the egg roll. This appetizer was delicious and a bit different from our normal fare of spring roll.
My chicken pho though was just okay. The soup was pretty bland and didn't have any taste of chicken broth. Or maybe it was too diluted ? The chicken meat was decent and not dry but that alone couldn't save the bland broth. Will not order that again.
Hubby's dry noodle was good. It had some dark sauce in the bottom which I couldn't quite make of it. The topping was prawn, sliced pork and fish cake. The noodle was served dry and the soup broth served separately in a small bowl. I like this style of noodle because it enables the noodle to have stronger taste.
Our extra dish of barbecue lemon grass pork was the winner. The amount of pork was generous and the pork was marinated well. We couldn't finish that and brought it home and still enjoyed it well. Would definitely order that again on our next visit.
