Bulldog - Malacca, Malaysia

Bulldog specializes in nyonya cuisine which is a cuisine combining Chinese and Malay spices and cooking technique. The term nyonya or peranakan is used to call the descendants of the early Chinese migrants who settled down in Singapore, Penang, Malacca and Indonesia and inter-marrying local Malay.

The restaurant is pretty close to our hotel. About fifteen minutes walking. It was a nice evening to walk since the day was so hot earlier. Evening was perfect time to explore the city.

When we got to the restaurant it was a slow night for them. Not too many people probably just another table. But seeing that there was a small performing area, I guess certain nights they got live music.

Our friend seemed like a regular there. She knows what she wants and asked the waiter if they had it. So we let her did the ordering. We got fried mackerel with chili sauce. Pai tee which was a deep fried pocket with shredded carrot and jicama filling. Pai tee is served with sweet chili sauce. Po piah which is like a wrap with shredded vegetable filling. In a way po piah is similar to pai tee but the healthier version.

We then wrapped it up with dessert which I had a photo but didn't remember what it was. Sort of like mochi ice cream. Sweet rice ball with ice cream filling inside.

All in all food was good. It's a cozy place to entertain guests. More like a cafe than a restaurant but food quality was good. Could not comment on price since we didn't pay for the meal.
