Banana Leaf Kitsilano - Vancouver, BC
Hubby's sister has been there numerous times. She pointed out the tasting menu for $20 per person and suggested that if we had big appetite. The tasting menu consisted of an asian salad, chicken satay, roti canai served with curry sauce. Then main entree were fish fillet in caramelized ginger sauce, sambal green beans and rendang beef curry. Steam rice was provided as well. This tasting menu also came with a dessert. For that amount of food I thought it was a pretty good deal.
Let's talk about the food now. The asian salad was typical salad mix with some vinaigrette. Nothing too special. Next was the chicken satay that came together with the roti canai on a platter. The chicken satay was juicy, lightly seasoned and served with some peanut sauce. The taste was pretty mild. The roti canai was a bit chewy and too sweet for my taste. I don't remember ever having roti canai tasted like this before. The curry sauce was too mild and watery. Quite disappointing.
The fish fillet in caramelized ginger sauce was tasty. Don't let the name stops you from ordering. Despite the name, ginger taste wasn't dominant at all. It's mostly sweet and savory. The sambal green beans was very nice as well. The beans were cooked well but still crunchy and sweet. Tasty and not spicy. Beef rendang was a bit too tough for my taste. The rendang taste was different from the Indonesian rendang that I'm used to. This one was more on the sweet side.
The last thing on the tasting menu was pandan coconut panna cotta. I am usually not a dessert person but I actually liked that dessert. It wasn't too sweet and felt very light and refreshing. That concluded everything on the tasting menu. Not everybody on our party ordered the tasting menu. Yet we were allowed to pass on whatever on our dishes to others to try.
Tasting menu recommended if you have big appetite.
