Kisha Poppo - Richmond

We found out about this place recently and thought we should give their buffet a try. So we went there on a Saturday afternoon for their lunch buffet. The lunch buffet hours run from 11:30 to 4:00 pm and the cost was $16.95 for Mon-Fri and $17.95 for weekend/holiday.

When we walked in at around 12 that Saturday it was not too busy. Less than 20 people. We were given a paper menu with all similar items that were shown on the laminated menu. All we need to do was write down how many pieces we wanted to order. There were only 2 slots to write on. So I guess we could only order twice ? All items were counted by piece even chicken karaage (Japanese style fried chicken nugget).

We decided to try all their sushi roll and ordered two pieces each. For their sushi, the options were limited to salmon, tuna, egg, imitation crab and tofu puff. So for those we only ordered salmon and tuna. And from cone sushi (temaki), we were only interested in spicy tuna so that's what we ordered. Then from the hot item list we tried out almost everything on the first round. Just a bit of here and there.

Some of the items that we didn't receive on the first round we tried ordering again and more items that we liked from the first round. From the first round, we liked the spicy tuna sushi cone. I don't normally like sushi cone because the nori gets all soggy and chewy. But this one because it was made to order so the nori was crispy especially since we ate it right away. Don't let the name scared you off because it wasn't very spicy.

The sashimi was limited to four pieces per person. So we used up our limit and tried both. I wasn't very keen on sashimi so I tried each piece but didn't quite enjoy it. The sushi roll was okay only. I think the only one I enjoyed the most because they were most flavorful was the one with yellow pickle on it (oshinko maki).

From the deep fried items I enjoyed most was the tempura especially yam tempura. The chicken karaage was nothing to write home about. The pieces were cut too small and tasted a bit stale. The veggie korokke was surprisingly not bad. But the gyoza were too big and a bit too soggy.

All in all it was an okay buffet. Not something I would miss for a long time. Most likely we won't be back anytime soon.
