Pho Hoa - Richmond, BC

Still open for take out. Phone number 604 270 2827.

Pho Hoa is the only international pho franchise restaurant that I know. The first bowl of pho that captivated me came from Pho Hoa. And this was 20 years ago !

Indonesians are familiar with bakso - (beef) meat ball soup that's usually served with either yellow noodle or rice vermicelli. Vietnamese pho in a way is similar to bakso but somehow when pho came to Jakarta it wasn't very well accepted. In a way basil leaves smell on pho makes people shy away from it. It's like cilantro leaves, either you like it or you don't.

Pho Hoa in my opinion is more for beginners. Their soup is clean with a hint of star anise. No chopped greens on it. And our today's order didn't even come with basil. That's fine. I can live with it. It's been a while since we visited any Pho Hoa joints. There were too many other pho restaurants out there. But in a way the steak meat ball (pho tai bovien) that we ordered today was actually good.

The grilled prawn and pork vermicelli came with shredded lettuce and a small tub of sweet and sour dressing. The dressing was refreshing. The pork was well marinated and grilled to nice charred. Just pour that dressing on the rice vermicelli and mix it all together. Yum.

Summer rolls was freshly made. The skin was nice and soft. The filling seemed a bit scarce and was mostly noodle. It was quite a huge roll though. The sauce was sweet and with a bit squirt of sriracha was just perfect to go with the roll.

At the time we visited there was a special offer of 20% off order over $25. One can call ahead to order or do an online order.
