HK BBQ Master - Richmond, BC

Not sure how long this restaurant has been at this location. We only live in this area for less than a year. A friend asked if I had tried because he heard good things about the bbq pork there. And I regrettably told him that I had not tried it yet. Richmond is full of varieties of restaurants. I don't think we'll ever get to try all of them. But I'm glad that now we could actually say that we have. and we glad we did.

As of August 1, this place only opens for take out. One could call ahead and order for pick up though seriously they are very efficient and it didn't take us that long even though there was a long line. We were there on Saturday afternoon pretty much lunch time. There was a line in front of the restaurant mostly due to social distancing. Not long later, a staff came out with pen and paper. He started asking what we wanted to order and wrote it on that piece of paper for us. It's a preorder process. Hand that piece of paper to another lady inside who will then request the order to the master chef who expertly placed everything in a togo box. Move over to the next window and pay another lady and out you go to enjoy your order. It's that simple.

One could order like a pound of barbecue pork or whole roast duck or half a chicken. But we chose one of the prearranged combo meal. It's rice combo with soy chicken, charsiu pork and barbecue pork. When we opened our take out box, the cut meat was neatly lined on top with some green onion oil. Below the meat was the steam rice. Along side the meat was a stem of broccoli. Nice.

My first piece was the barbecue pork. The skin portion was a bit darker than usual. When I bit on it I heard the satisfying crunch. Argh..happiness. I noticed the barbecue pork had a nice combination of fat and lean portion. It's not too fat and not too lean either. The charsiu pork was also a bit darker and seemed like a bit barbecued as well. Not too sweet. The soy chicken was surprisingly juicy and tender. It was a breast portion but still juicy and not dry. I was impressed.

The two of us are not big on meat eating so that combo pack was just right for us. We had some left over stir fry veggies and we polished them all out. The amount of rice I think was just nice.
