Afuri Ramen

These last few days the temperature has dropped to like record low. We have lived in Vancouver area the last three years. But this year even Autumn didn't seem to exist, we moved straight from summer to winter. And today's temperature is -15℃. No, you see it correctly, minus fifteen degree celcius !

We felt like having something warm. So we searched around for some hot noodle soup and I remember seeing one close by. So off we went to Afuri Ramen.

The location was off No.3 Road, almost in the warehouse area just by that big hole across from Lansdowne Mall. Yup, that big hole construction that didn't look like it would get completed anytime soon. The inside had high ceiling and felt spacious and bright. There are some bar seating and also regular table seating.

We saw a line by the door using the ordering machine so being nice patrons and following provincial order to social distance we waited outside. A nice waitress saw us and quickly opened the door for us and invited us to another ordering machine. She even explained how to use it. The tips from her was the combo meals come out to a better value because you get drinks and side dish and ramen.

I got tonkatsu shio ramen and hubby got dan dan spicy ramen and we shared chicken karaage. We finished our ordering process, paid for the order and got a wooden plate number. Just like the one in the food court but this one was made of wood. Very nice indeed. And we both love the ordering machine. It's quite typically use in restaurants in Japan for patrons to order and pay at the entrance and then give the tickets to the waitresses.

We picked a table by the window and placed our wooden order number on the place specified. The table set up is pretty interesting. It's actually a long communal table but due to social distancing now, it was sort of sectioned off. The middle of the table had a wooden raised platform where we placed our wooden order number. We could also placed our shared dishes up there and still have room below for more items if necessary. Very smart design.

My tonkatsu shio ramen came with a piece of charsiu pork typical of ramen topping. It's quite thick with combination of fat and lean part. The noodle was quite thin compared to my hubby's tan tan ramen. The soup was rich but not overly salty. Hubby's tan tan ramen has thicker slightly curly noodle. The soup had a tint of fiery red but not too spicy. For tan tan ramen, instead of pork charsiu, minced pork was used.

We also shared an order of chicken karaage which is fried boneless chicken. These were soo good. They were piping hot, crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Well seasoned and served with a dollop of mayo ? I didn't care for the mayo nor did the chicken karaage needed anymore dipping sauce. The only complaint was probably not enough chicken in one order. 😔
