Kokae Lana Chompa Restaurant ร้านอาหาร โกแก แลนา ชมผา - Chiang Rai, Thailand
Our friends took us here for an early dinner. It's not exactly far from Chiang Rai but it took a bit of drive. The majority of the road was two way traffic. So for us who are not used to drive in that condition could be a bit nerve wrecking. Especially when the weather was not cooperating.
We left home around 4:30 and reached there just after 5. Our friend R had called earlier and made reservation. I think it's also good to call ahead because we experienced another restaurant that has been closed for a few days every time we went. Not sure what happened.
It started raining after we left home and just stopped a bit for us to be able to walk from our car to the restaurant without drenching wet. The view was spectacular to a mountain far away and greenery of the paddy field. The owner and the wife greeted us when we walked in. Apparently our friends have been to this place a few times prior.
While we waited for the chef to finish his first dish we managed to take some photos. Then the first dish came out. A very beautiful deep fried tilapia served on a bed of greens with red curry sauce and some cut up green and red chilies. I have noticed since we arrived that red curry does go very well with deep fried fish and seafood.
The second dish was a squid salad with slices of tomatoes in between celery and cilantro. Sweetness of squid combined with tanginess from salad dressing made this dish very refreshing. I could eat squid salad everyday.
The third dish was an egg dish with rice. The concept was similar to Japanese omurice - fried rice wrapped with egg. But in this case, I think the chef was trying to come up with something different. It seemed to me that the egg had pieces of sausage and lighten up a bit with milk ? And the rice was served plain. I don't know what to make of this. 😐
The next dish was stir fry rice noodle with chicken. The rice noodle used was the very wide type almost like a sheet. And even though it said chicken but it actually had squid as well. Ah..loved those squid. It had some slight burn smell that could only be achieved when fried with high flame. The vegetables used was napa cabbage and topped off with a big prawn fried tempura style.
The last dish was also another noodle dish. This one was pad see ew with squid. In a glance this dish was very similar to the previous one. I would say the only difference was the vegetables used. Classic pad see ew uses gai lan (chinese broccoli). And this dish was pad see ew by book. Very nice and tasty.
I noticed in the west (US and Canada) the noodle dish are usually too sweet for my taste. But here so far I noticed I am loving each noodle dish and not shy away from it as they are perfectly seasoned and balanced.
