City 1 Cafe - Vancouver, BC, Canada

Found out about this place from a family member on this visit. But only managed to try it recently. I delayed visiting it with hubby only because we need bigger group to be able to order more items. 😎

So we finally managed to get another person to join us to check this place out. We ordered char kuey teow (fried rice noodle) which had a chili sign next to it. One order of mixed satay which had combination of chicken, pork and beef. One order of hainanese chicken rice and last minute item deep fried yam rice cake.

Out of four items, the best one for me was the satay. The meat was tender and well marinated. More on the sweet side but not much of spices. The peanut sauce was a joke. Very thin. But I could do without the sauce anyway. The hainanese chicken rice was decent. The rice was flavorful and not too oily. The chicken was a bit colder than how I like it. I know hainanese chicken supposedly dipped in ice water once cooked to stop it from getting over cooked. But I like my chicken at least room temperature. 😑

Now, the bad one was the char kuey teow. It's a bit yellowish as if got curry powder on. The smell was pretty similar to Singapore style fried vermicelli. But hey char kuey teow is not supposed to look and smell like that. Char kuey teow isn't supposed to have curry powder in it !

The wild card was the deep fried yam rice cake. We had no expectation. Not even sure what that one supposed to be. So when it came out with some deep fried longish shape mini popsicle we looked at each other. 😟But after that char kuey teow, this one didn't taste so bad. At least I had no expectation. It tasted just like rice cake, chewy and sweet. Not overly sweet though.
