A Small Town Called Singkawang - Singkawang, Indonesia
The name Singkawang came to my radar just recently when we were searching for Pontianak. Pontianak being one of the biggest city in Kalimantan and also hometown of my friend, Christine. She and family happened to be back there last year. During our short meeting in Jakarta last year, she mentioned Pontianak as a culinary haven. This year in Indonesia, we planned to stay longer than usual. Hubby getting bored then suggested that we visit Pontianak. It's a delay visit since we couldn't do it last year.
We decided to include Singkawang in our four days four nights trip to Pontianak. We would spend two nights in Singkawang and two nights in Pontianak. Singkawang being a small town doesn't have an airport. So we would fly to Pontianak and take a taxi to Singkawang.
We found our taxi service online, the name was Abi Taxi. This was the website www.taxipontianak.id and this was the contact number +62 813 4579 5299. I understand that they don't actually run a bunch of taxis but they are more like a middle man who connect drivers who are willing to drive to Singkawang with passengers who need the service.
I'll write another post for the trip itself when I have time. We stayed at Grand Mandarin Inn close to town area. It's walking distance to the morning market. So the following morning we walked through the morning market to go get breakfast. Our destination was this porridge place called Bubur Aloi.
Bubur Aloi only serves one type of porridge which is pork porridge. But I guess you could ask for meat porridge or mixed porridge (with offal). We got a mixed one with additional egg. The place was not big. Most likely could fit like about 20-25 people if filled. We waited for about ten minutes before we received our orders. But mean while we waited I managed to see how they prepared the porridge. 😋
The hot porridge was mixed with meat and offal. Then the meat and offal got separated and took out so it could be mixed again when ordered. The "porridge" was not like cantonese gooey porridge. This porridge was more like softer than rice porridge and the grains were still visible. It tasted rich especially with the crunchy crispy pork fat topping.
If you're going, make sure to go early as they close off pretty early at 9:30 am.
