First Dinner in Pontianak - Indonesia
Jalan Gajah Mada where our hotel is located is popular for its street food. So when evening came we got ready to check out what's available.
We did look up the map to see whether there's any chai kueh or choi pan available in the neighborhood. Chai kueh or choi pan is a steam snack originated in Pontianak. In a way it's quite similar to hagow at dimsum restaurant but the skin is thinner and made of mixture of rice flour and tapioca starch. The filling is mixture of shredded jicama and finely chopped dried shrimp. I did notice that the chai kueh we had so far in Singkawang did not use dried shrimp.
We found one quite close to our hotel so we headed to that direction first. On the way there we noticed lost of stalls being set up by the road side. They sold snacks, drinks and even heavier food for dinner. Lots of people drive by to purchase.
Ahin Chai Kue Panas Siam
We ordered five steam chai kueh and five pan fried chai kueh. I have been curious about the pan fried chai kueh ever since I saw my friend Kristin made it. I never know there was a pan fried version and curious about the taste.
The place was pretty quiet when we got there. Maybe this type of food is more suitable for morning. We placed our order and waited. The order came pretty fast. The panfried chai kueh were a bit oily. The texture didn't quite what I was thinking. I guess because the skin was pretty thin so there wasn't much crust.
The steam chai kue were fine. They were smaller compared to the one we had in Singkawang. So nothing too special.

After that light meal of chai kue, hubby still got room for others. So we looked for mitiaw. There's a misunderstanding behind this. I thought mitiaw was a mixed between mie (yellow noodle) and kwetiaw (rice noodle). So I suggested that to hubby when he was wondering what to try.
We found a location sort of close by and walked there. The place was pretty busy when we got there even though the location was a bit off the main street.
It didn't take long for the order to arrive. It did not look like what I expected - a mixture of yellow and rice noodle. 😅 I googled mitiaw again. Apparently mitiaw in Pontianak only means stir fry kwetiau (rice noodle). So I was wrong.
The portion of this mitiaw was huge so we couldn't finish. I only helped eating the beef which was pretty tender. But there was lots of rice noodle. And the way it was cooked was not really stir fry. It was still pretty wet. Not really my style. But it's a Pontianak style.
