Bánh xèo cô Anh sông Hoài - Hoi An, Vietnam
We had banh xeo (Vietnamese pancake) when we were in San Jose. We also had it on our first night in Hoi An. But I still feel that I needed to try a few more to be able to compare. So I searched Google maps and came across this restaurant. It's not too far from our hotel so I put it on the list to try.
When we reached there it was almost lunch time. I believe banh xeo and the others on the menu here are more of breakfast items. Perhaps that's why when we went there the restaurant wasn't busy anymore.
The menu here only had four items on it. And from my understanding it's only four pieces on each order. So we ordered each one of every item on their menu.
When our orders were brought out, there were a plate of rice paper and another plate of fresh vegetables and herbs. The lady who brought our orders pointed to a jar of sauce on the table. I guess she wanted us to use that as dipping sauce. The sauce looked thick and spicy. But after I tried it, it was not spicy. Just a bit sauce.
We took a piece of the rice paper. This one looked different from the one we used to make fresh roll. It's a bit stiff and squarish. Where's the water, we were wondering ourselves. Don't we need water to soften this rice paper ? As I was putting together a roll, one lady came over to our table and showed us how to roll it. She put a piece of the crispy pancake, some veggies and roll it up easily into a tight roll. Oh..that looked pretty easy.
So later on we found out that this type of rice paper doesn't require water to soften. It is a bit chewy when we bit into it. I guess it's just supposed to be that way.
