Charming Xiangxi Show 魅力湘西 - Wulingyuan, China

Our Didi driver who took us from Zhangjiajie City to Wulingyuan was a chatty young man. We started the conversation about electric car. Then at one point we passed by an advertisement about a show. He then told us people only go to this one if the Charming Xiangxi is sold out. Then he told us that we should go watch it.

It's just our luck that when we checked in our hotel at Joy Maple Smart Hotel in Wulingyuan, the staff there was so helpful and managed to secure the tickets for us. So we didn't even have to find out where to buy the tickets. All we needed to do was bring ourselves there. It's just happened that our Didi driver also pointed the Grand Theatre to us on the way to our hotel.

It was raining that night so the outdoor show portion of Charming Xiangxi was cancelled. We managed to get in almost in time to watch the show. The theatre wasn't exceptionally huge but it's still pretty big. We could still see the stage pretty clearly from where we sat. And there was a huge screen on the side of the stage to give background story of the act.

The opening act was a fiery drum performed like a war dance. Very energetic way to start the performance. There's singing, dancing, acrobatic act performed as part of a funny background story about courtship in Tujia culture.

The show was about one hour long and ended with groom wedding outfit wearing competition. The participants were chosen from the audience ! 😁 It's like a comical show with the willing (or unwilling) audience being the victims. They all played along and laughed with the audience. It's a good way to end the night.
