Gake Sushi & Lounge - Vancouver, Canada
We visited this restaurant with a few family member for lunch. This restaurant offers jubako lunch. Jubako in literal translation means stacked boxes. It's used for keeping or transporting food. The boxes are made of lacquered wood and stacked neatly on top of each other with a single lid to close it off.
When we first arrived, we saw the table next door had a lot of pretty boxes spread on their table. We were wondering what they ordered. Later it on we caught up on the idea and realized that our lunch would also arrive in the same manner.
The jubako lunch is pretty much a combo lunch served in the jubako boxes. In this case, the lunch will consist of three different items. There were two different prices, each price featured a list of main items to choose from. The second and third items are the same for both price categories.
When the jubako boxes were delivered they were stacked on top of each other. Me and hubby shared an unagi lunch box. The second item in the lunch box were three pieces of aburi sushi and two pieces of oshi sushi. The third item in the okazu were tempura with deep fried scallop (?). The deep fried scallop were a bit questionable as I don't believe for that price range the restaurant could afford to give us real scallop. So perhaps those were imitation scallop ? Just like imitation crab.
All in all it was a fun lunch. Would we visit it again ? Maybe in the future but definitely not on this visit. The fish on the aburi sushi was very thin we could hardly taste it. At the time of our visit, there were two types of jubako offered with the price of CAD 25 (USD 17.85) and CAD 28 (USD 19.99).
