Hooray Seafood Restaurant - Ipoh, Malaysia
This was our second visit to this restaurant. The first was with our big family during Chinese New Year visit. I posted the story on my other blog.
There were five of us on this visit so we could not order as much though seriously ordering at this restaurant was not very hard. See, our relatives knew the owner well. When we sat down, the owner came with the menu booklet. But technically it's just for newbies like me to see. Our relatives hardly look at the menu. The owner made recommendation, they asked questions and before I knew it we already had a few items. I didn't understand most of the conversation since it was done in Cantonese. I felt like having a tofu dish so I requested an additional tofu dish.
From what I gathered, this restaurant was a simple kopitiam before. Kopitiams in Malaysia are mostly open air and serves simple items like stir fry noodle, noodle soup, etc. So the transformation from kopitiam to a proper restaurant was quite an improvement for this family. It's still a family business as later on I saw the wife and children at the cashier on the way out.
Our orders consisted of deep fried mullet fish. This type of fish reminded me of the smelt though this mullet fish is bigger than smelt. At the same time because they are bigger they don't become super crispy so eating them require a bit more cautious.
The tofu dish reminded me of the seaweed tofu that became quite popular in Jakarta. It's soft tofu covered with a light dust of flour (?) and then deep fried to create a crust. Then a broth consisted of ground pork, soy sauce and oyster sauce and maybe other seasoning is poured on top. This version of tofu was good and not too salty so it could be eaten by itself without heavy rice.
The lala clam seemed like a quick stir fry with light soy sauce and topped off with sliced green onion and red chili. The taste was pretty mild.
The signature dish of the restaurant was something they call bbq pork served with topping of pickled red onion. The so called bbq pork was not exactly bbq pork as it was deep fried. I think the pork was actually ground pork mixed into a paste then deep fried like meat patties. The unique part was the pickled red onion which was slightly sweet and tangy. I personally think the bbq pork was too salty.
Another interesting dish was a stir fry prawn with solok pepper. Actually everybody on the table had no clue what solok was until it was brought to our table. And then we were all oh..it's a type of pepper. Solok is a mild green pepper stir fry with deep fried prawn.
Total bill came to MYR 190 (USD 46.50) including some alcoholic drinks.
