Healthcare Cost in Jakarta - Indonesia

Continuing my story about hubby's recent hospitalization. We have been travelling in South East Asia for four years now. At one point we did purchase travel insurance from Canada. We encountered a situation in Chiangrai, Thailand where I had some sort of infection and needed to go to hospital.

The injury that I had required a minor wound care at a hospital in Chiangrai. After that I chose to care for my own wound for a few days.

That was in the beginning of our travel in Asia. We later on purchase some sort of insurance from a bank in Chiangrai just to have peace of mind. But since 2024 we hardly spend time in Thailand and actually spend more time in Indonesia. Because of that we did not renew our health insurance.

So far both me and my hubby had visited dental clinic for simple cleaning procedures. I had to visit an ENT last year and hubby visited a doctor for his fever last year as well. The physician visit cost about IDR 750k (USD 42). Some other clinics could be less with medications included. Some antibiotic could cost more IDR 1mio (USD 56.72) or more. But in general if you don't have a serious medical condition, day to day visit to doctors are not going to break a bank without insurance, in my opinion.

Until this recent hospitalization we still thought we don't really need  health insurance.

Hubby's recent hospitalization cost IDR 91mio (USD 5161.42) or (CAD 7125.85). The breakdown was as follow :

• ER visit includes all test and drugs IDR 7,587,475 (USD 430.35 or CAD 594.14).
• Appendix surgery includes room, drugs, etc IDR 77,768,760 (USD 4410.96 or CAD 6089.76).

We opted for VIP room which cost IDR 1.6 mio (USD 90.75 or CAD 125.29) per night. Unfortunately hospital policy dictates that the cost of drugs, procedures etc will be tied to the room type. Meaning our drugs for VIP room will be more expensive than another patient with the same condition staying at let's see kelas 1 room (2 people per room) or kelas 2 (3 people per room).
