Kue Mo aka Kuih Mor

Actually I think the correct spelling most likely is kuih mor or kuih makmur if you ask a Bruneian. Being an Indonesian, I am not very familiar with this sort of kuih (kue). Though the taste is familiar. I guess the taste of flour, butter and egg yolk is something I am used to.

Anyway as usual for Chinese New Year hubby wanted kuih mor and we will be making mor(e) this year. How appropriate. 😋 Because we'll give them as presents to both my sis-in-law. Both love kuih mor as well. It's a tradition in their family.

Yield : 40-50 (depends on the size)

Ingredients :
2 stick unsalted butter (226 gram) at room temperature
350 gram plain flour
1 egg yolk

Icing sugar : mixture of icing sugar and milk powder. If you like it sweet then use ratio of 1:1. If you are like me and try to avoid sugar then use ratio of 1:3 (1 portion of sugar and 3 portion of milk powder). Or even 1:4 is still good.

Method :
Use a fork, mix the egg yolk with butter until it's well mixed. Then add the flour a bit at a time until all the flour is incorporated in.

One tip if your butter is not soften enough to be mixed with fork. Put the butter in a big bowl bigger than your pot. Fill in your pot with water and put it on the stove top. Turn on the fire at medium heat. Put your bowl on top of the pot. Make sure the bowl is bigger than your pot so it will not sink into the pot. This method is using the idea of tempering (heating up an ingredient but not on direct heat). Once the butter get soft enough but not to the point of melting then turn off the heat and remove the bowl. Careful handling the bowl as it's hot now.

Back to the dough once all the ingredients are mixed well. I found that kneading the dough a bit helps with mixing the ingredients even better. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes. Then you can start making your dough balls.

Pick a bit dough and roll the dough into a ball with diameter about 2 cm or slightly short of 1 inch. This really depends on whether you like them bigger or smaller. I think 2 cm is the best size.

Mean while preheat oven to 350℉ (180℃).

Once the dough is all shaped into smaller balls popped the tray into the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes. Every oven has different heat. Once cooked, take the tray of balls out and set them aside to slightly cool.

Then roll the balls into your icing sugar mix. After that you just have to stop yourself from eating. 😋
