Dae Bak Bon Ga - Vancouver, Canada

beef and octopus stew at Dae Bak Bon Ga
This time in Vancouver our friend took us out to a Korean restaurant in the downtown area. When we got there it was close to 9 pm but the place close late at 11 so we were welcomed. I liked the way they used some sort of decorative grass to make the booth felt more private.

We ordered the seafood pancake for appetizer, bullak jeon gol (beef, octopus, vegetables stew) and spicy grill pork From my experience the stew is usually enough to feed at least three adult.

Manhattan Hub - San Francisco

California cheese steak
For the size of the restaurant, they offer quite an extensive menu. Burgers, sandwiches, cheese steaks, salad, etc. Everything looked delish. After browsing through the wall menu, I decided on California style cheese steak with bacon and avocado. Yum..

Place your order and grab the number given to you. Pick a drink and pay at the cashier. Either wait for your order to go or find a seat. It's that simple. And surprisingly they got my order fast too. They must have tons of people working in the kitchen as well.

My California cheese steak was yummy. The bacon wasn't too overpowering. The cheese wasn't too rich and greasy. All in all a satisfying lunch. I wanted to go back to check out their salad and soup option as well.

Road Trip : San Jose - Vancouver (part 2)

bunch of cattle roaming the field
We woke up early the next day. Packed up our belonging and hit the road around 6. The road was quiet and the air was cool and crisp. Cattle roamed around the field doing their business. Everything was green and refreshing, such an opposite of California where everything was dry and golden color.

I drove for three hours without much traffic until around Eugene and we switched seats. Hubby took the wheel again and drove the rest of it. We stopped by at Costco in Tumwater, Washington. We got lunch here and gas at the same time. Our lunch was caesar salad and turkey melt sandwich along with a big dose of vanilla ice cream with strawberry sauce. The vanilla ice cream helped kept us awake for the rest of the journey.

Rodeway Inn - Medford, Oregon

We stopped by Medford on our drive to Vancouver, Canada this time. We picked Medford just because the distance was just right. We got there around 8 pm and went about getting dinner first before we checked in the hotel.

Checked in was a breeze since it’s already prepaid through Expedia. We got our key and got back in the car to look for the room. Each room would have a covered parking spot just outside the room.

The room was decent size with big couch next to the air conditioner. There was also a desk as part of the entertainment center that contained a big TV. We didn’t even turn on the TV at all so couldn’t comment on the channels. A small refrigerator with freezer, microwave and tiny coffee pot were also part of the amenities. The last three items looked pretty new.

Golden Wok - Medford, Oregon

Vietnamese grilled chicken noodle soup
We found out this restaurant prior to our arrival at Medford. Reviews on Yelp showed that they serve pho (Vietnamese noodle soup). Hubby is a pho fanatico. His passion is to try pho where ever he goes. So even though I may have doubt about this restaurant in Medford, Oregon, I took down the name anyway as an option.

Later on I found out that it was down the road where our hotel was located. A big plus. So we decided to give it a try.

We got there around 8 pm. But parking lot was empty. We walked in and restaurant was empty as well. Normally I would suggest to leave and find another restaurant. But we were tired after hours of driving and at a foreign place. So I thought what the heck let's give it a try.

Road Trip : San Jose - Vancouver, Canada (part 1)

San Jose - Medford, Oregon
The trip to Vancouver this time was kinda last minute. But it all worked out better since we decided to drive there instead of flying. Driving gave us more flexibility. We could leave last minute without worrying to get discounted air tickets. Also we were excited to give our Prius a try to see how efficient it is going on a longer distance.

The distance we needed to cover was close to 1000 miles. Ideally we would like to divide the distance equally and reached Vancouver in two days. That way we won't get too tired and would still be able to enjoy the drive. But we couldn't leave in the morning, so we could only drive around six hours before it gets dark. I didn't want to arrive in a foreign place late at night.

We packed everything in the car the night before. I still had to go in the office and got a few things done that day. We didn't leave our house until 1 pm. But the driving out of San Jose was smooth sailing. We didn't come close to any traffic slow down.

The further north we went, the further we got out of populated areas, the less traffic we encountered. We reached Medford, Oregon around 7:30ish that evening. It was not dark yet so we went and looked for Costco to fill up our gas tank. So far our Prius has been amazing - 10 gallons for 400 miles.

One interesting thing that we came across at the gas station was you don't fill up your gas yourself in Oregon. There was an attendant that would do that for you. In fact the guy was almost upset that hubby tried to pump gas himself.

That night we had dinner at Golden Wok which was down the road from our hotel Rodeway Inn.

Chef Li - San Jose

This restaurant is close to my office but yet I have never really tried it except for one occasion where I did a take out order for their hot and sour soup. Yesterday I had a chance to go there with a friend for lunch.

The place wasn't that busy when we walked in so we were seated immediately. I immediately noticed a sign that says "please don't touch the flowers". Apparently beside operating as restaurant, they also sell potted orchid flower plant. I am not expert on those so no comment on what type of orchid flowers available there.

We ordered from the lunch menu. Each item is served with soup and egg roll and choice of rice or fried rice. I picked eggplant with spicy garlic sauce and my friend chose honey walnut shrimp. She asked if they have other drinks other soda but they only had lemonade so she opted for hot tea instead.
