I know that my parents enjoy breakfast at our hotel Luminor. But if we have breakfast in the hotel and later on our day was already booked by relatives eager to buy us meals then we won't have chance to try other food.
So on second morning, I decided we'd go out to try food outside our hotel. I found two places what we should try. Actually those places were not necessarily the best but I think they should be good enough.
The popular food of Jambi is their tamie. Literally tamie (in Tio Ciu dialect) means dry noodle. It's pretty similar to bakmi in Jakarta. But the focus of the tamie is its noodle. The topping is usually not a whole lot. But the main actor is the noodle itself. Don't forget to put in the chili paste that's on the table. This chili paste it's not really spicy but it gives a bit umami flavor. MSG maybe ?
The problem with visiting Jambi was not too many people actually been there and did food blog on it. So looking for reference on best tamie was a bit tricky. I went with words of mouth. But people's taste also vary. From two different sources I heard conflicting information so given the time constriction we had, I must choose one.
Bakmi Pasar Hong Kong
Jalan Tempoa II No.9, Cemp. Putih, Kec. Jelutung, Kota Jambi, Jambi 36124

I chose this one based on what the pictures look like on Google reviews. The restaurant looks nice and new. There's air conditioned room and also fresh air portion. That day it was raining in the morning so we chose to sit at the fresh air part.
Other than tamie, there was also mie pok. Mie pok here is not quite like the mie pok in Singapore where it was served with chili paste. Here was just similar to tamie but the noodle used was a wider flat noodle. We didn't order much as we had another location to visit. Hubby ordered an iced milo drink.
The tamie and mie pok came on plates. Two bowls of soup were brought in as well. Each bowl had two wontons and minced pork in it with some greens. Mean while the protein topping on the noodle was a few pieces of charsiu. Really not much protein. Mom liked the soup and the wonton. I guess she wasn't satisfied sharing noodle with dad. She wanted extra wonton. I ordered extra wontons her and additional soft boiled eggs.
Each order of soft boiled eggs consisted of two eggs. Surprisingly the eggs actually took longer to prepare. Perhaps the eggs had to be boiled at a certain temperature but certain period of time. While the wontons were cooked faster.
I think the noodle was pretty good. Like I said, don't forget to use the chili paste.
Pempek Mamad

Once we were done having meal at the tamie place behind Pasar Hong Kong, we walked to the main road in the front. Even though it's called Pasar Hong Kong but I think it's quite a small pasar (market). Most of the sellers were selling by road side. Not too many sellers either because it was a bit misty.
We caught Grab there to go to our next breakfast place. It's a pempek restaurant called Pempek Mamad. What is pempek ? Pempek is a deep fried snack made of fish paste, tapioca starch and garlic. Perhaps also MSG. Pempek is served with vinegar sauce made of dried shrimp powder, garlic, onion, sugar and salt.
This restaurant also served side product of pempek like tekwan and lenggang. Tekwan is a soup version of pempek. In tekwan version, the pempek are not fried but instead boiled. The soup has match stick size of jicama and pempek. Season yourself with chili and dried shrimp powder.
Lenggang is a cut pempek and then fried with egg. Lenggang is also served with vinegar sauce.
