Best Sauerkraut Fish in Dali - Kunming, China
We arrived in Dali around 12ish. It took about 30 minutes to reach Dali Old Town by car from the train station. The road in Dali old town is small and easily congested. We learned later on that most taxis or Didi cars would just drop passengers off the bigger street outside the old town. That explained why we saw people waiting by the roadside.
Same thing happened to us, our driver dropped us off the bigger street about maybe 300 meters from our homestay. She pointed to us which direction to take. I looked at the map and it's about ten minutes walk from our starting point. But the problem was the road in the old town consisted of stones that were put together. Almost like cobblestones. 😓
After walking for about ten minutes, we decided to stop by for lunch first. 😁 It's hard to resist so many restaurants with beautiful worthy drooling menu.
We stopped outside a restaurant that shows a picture of sauerkraut fish 酸菜鱼. The picture looked so inviting. So we went in like mesmerized by it. There were more pictures posted inside. I told the owner that we wanted the sauerkraut fish and a spicy ribs fish. The owner first something which confused us. But then he clarified that there would be too much food. I asked if we could get the fish dish smaller. He said nope. Okay, since that's the dish that drew us in, we ended up just ordering that one.
Two packs of dishes were brought out. It's our first time seeing dishes packed in a plastic bag. When we opened the pack, there were a small plate, a small bowl and a tea cup. Chopsticks were wrapped separately.
Then a huge bowl of fish swimming in soup was brought out. Along with that a big container of rice. Then we were left to enjoy our food. The fish was delicate and tasted fresh. No fishy smell. Despite the amount of sichuan peppercorn used, the soup itself was not super spicy or very numbing. It's a very good combination of slight tangy, salty and savory. Hubby finished the bucket of rice !
And then when times to pay, we were amazed that it only cost RMB 78 (USD 10.89). That meal was like a benchmark for us. Any meal would have to be compared to that epic meal. Whether it's as good or whether the price was comparable. It's really hard to beat. 😅
Sorry, could not find the address for this restaurant other than it's on Pindeng Road (平等路). Very close to our homestay Jinmu Homestay.
