Yamcha - Bandung, Indonesia
We chose to try this restaurant based on its proximity to our hotel Crowne Plaza. Other than the location, I was also interested by the varieties of items on their menu.
Technically one could walk comfortably to this restaurant from Crowne Plaza hotel. It's pretty convenient, no road crossing. But we drove there because it's night time and it's a bit dark. The drive there is a bit longer due to the round about getting there and most of the roads in Bandung is one way.
This restaurant is located in a strip mall with another two other restaurants. During busy hours, I can see finding parking here could be a challenge. But that night it was Wednesday night and not too busy.
When we walked in the restaurant I was surprised because the restaurant is pretty spacious inside. There was an employee who greeted us and told us to sit ourselves. The restaurant has a diner feel with neon lights and comfortable booths. In the middle of the huge room was a drink station (I guess) with glass display of desserts like cakes and pastries.
Menu booklet was provided but we ordered ourselves through an online ordering portal. A lot of items looked interesting. In the end I think I over ordered. 😒 I didn't want to order a main course because I'm more interested in its pastries and small dishes. One item that I thought was interesting was savory soymilk with deep fried dough stick.
In the end of a few items that we ordered, the ones that stood out by far were rice roll. Make sure to use the chili oil on the side stand. We liked this style of rice roll as the rice sheet is thin and we could taste the filling more. And the chili oil is a must when it comes to rice roll.
The pan fried dumplings were pretty good as well. Juicy and not too salty. The crispy sheet that it came with seems unnecessarily big but tasteless. The charsiu pastry was good as well. The outer layer was soft with the filling that's just right. Though I think it would be better to drop the coloring of the charsiu.
The items that need to be avoided (at least until they could get them right) were cakwe (fried dough stick). I don't know where they got their dough recipe but it's completely wrong texture. This cakwe is too dense and too doughy. Cakwe needs to be more airy and less bready. Also avoid their special porridge. Too thick. In my opinion it's better to make it more runny and serve it in a bigger bowl. Don't cram the porridge in a tiny bowl.
