Uno Beef Noodle 御牛堂 - Richmond, BC

Saw this restaurant on the way to Price Smart and was intrigued to find out what type of food they serve. We visited during lunch time on weekend. It was busy but not full when we got there. We got a table right away and was brought the menu.

We have read reviews and looked through pictures on Google reviews prior so had a bit ideas on what to order. Uno Beef Noodle is a Taiwanese style noodle place with other snack options like soup dumpling and other Taiwanese street food.

I'm more into trying street food. The beef noodle was filling for me so we avoided that. We ordered a few street food and just one dish of noodle just because it sounded interesting. All the food we ordered was good. The only noodle dish we ordered was called lao hu mian 老虎麵 which literally means tiger noodle. It's actually a dry noodle dish with minced meat topping, bean sprout and fried shallot. A bit meat broth served together with the noodle complimented the noodle and gave a bit heat which added flavor as well.

The other street food that we ordered that stood out were the gua bao 刈包 - pork belly bun. This was served on a bun very similar to the ones used for the beijing roast duck. The pork belly inside was thick and cooked well till it melts in your mouth as you bit into it. It's also seasoned well and topped with a bit chopped cilantro. This dish seemed to be one of the favorite dish at this place and I can see why. So give this a try when you check out this place.

Another dish that we enjoyed was the beef onion pancake. It's made of layered pastries with sliced beef and green onion with sweet sauce. So sinfully yummy. We also got an order of milk tea with pearl. It's not too sweet and it was pretty rich. I think the milk used was fresh milk. Recommended.

The other dish we ordered which were not bad but was just fine were custard bun and spicy fried chicken. The custard buns were normal and nothing too special. The spicy fried chicken was very nice and crispy on the outside. Taiwanese is well know for its popcorn chicken so fried chicken couldn't go wrong. The spiciness came from the numbing peppercorn used in the herb mixture. And I didn't quite enjoy the numbing spice. This numbing peppercorn needs time to get used to and I'm still getting there. Other than that, the fried chicken was wonderful.
