Jason Nyonya House - Georgetown, Malaysia
After our first encounter with nyonya food at Richard Rivalee, we decided to go for another shot. This time we picked Jason Nyonya House. This restaurant provided simple nyonya food with no fancy surrounding nor decor.
It was lunch time when we arrived. There were already a few tables occupied when we walked in. We ordered pork trotter vinegar, chicken cincalok, kapitan chicken, kue paitee and sambal okra. We were a bit unsure of chicken cincalok since we had a few people in our group who has not had cincalok before.
What is cincalok ? Taken from wikipedia, cincalok is a Malay condiment that originated in Malacca, Malaysia, consumed by Malays, Peranakans and Kristangs. Its origins can be traced back to the Portuguese occupation of Malacca. Cincalok is fermented small shrimp or krill. For some that are not familiar with it, the smell could be off putting.
The kue paitee which at other nyonya restaurant is served in the shell was deconstructed here. The shells were served side by side with the jicama stir fry as filling. And there were a few big prawns as topping as well. Not only that, a few lettuce leaves were included as part of the platter. This platter of kue paitee definitely was different from any of the kue paitee I have ever tried before.
The pork trotter vinegar was a surprising dish that showed up here. I have never had this at other peranakan cuisine restaurant before. All this time I only knew that pork trotter vinegar is a Hakka dish. Or isn't it ? The pork trotter vinegar here was pretty good. Well cooked and fragrant. Though the style was a bit different from what I am used to. In our family, the vinegar was more sweet than tangy. But this dish used a tangy vinegar hence the vinegar smell was pretty obvious.
All in all it was a good meal. I think in term of value, this restaurant definitely offered better value compared to Richard Rivalee. So if you only care for the food and not any IG worthy photo opportunities then this restaurant is for you. 💗
