Rice Roll Battle : Yinji Changfen vs Yummy Rice Roll

On our last trip to Guangzhou we didn't get enough share of rice roll so on this trip to Vancouver, Canada we tried to get our fill of this soft roll.

We had this rice roll at these two restaurants just two days apart so it's fair enough to do comparison while the taste still lingered on my tongue. 😋

As you can see on the photo above, the presentation and texture of the rice roll were different. The one above from Yinji was like a slab while the one below from Yummy was like a wrinkle rolled sheet. Because of this, the rice roll from Yinji tasted too much rice dough and not enough filling.

On the second picture, even though the sauce didn't look very obvious especially on the photo of the rice from Yummy Rice Roll but the sauce was not as dark as the one below from Yinji. The sauce used at Yinji rice roll was more potent and saltier. While the sauce used at Yummy was more diluted perhaps with water and a bit sugar.

In term of taste alone, I think Yummy rice roll is a winner. I like the ratio of the filling and rice dough. The sheet dough is thinner so when you eat it feels like you always have meat with your rice sheet. While the Yinji one by the time I got to the corner of the rice slab, I only tasted rice sheet, no meat left.

Because of the location at the food court Yummy rice roll has cheaper price and offers better value. For a rice roll with pork, at the time of this post was written it was CAD 5.71 (USD 4.11).

On the other hand, if you go with a group of friends or family and not everyone likes rice roll, Yinji has varieties on its menu. From toast to dimsum to noodle. And the menu of the rice roll has so many variant as well. Mean while Yummy rice roll only has about five variants of rice roll. But since it's located at a food court, there are plenty of other stalls to order from if rice roll isn't your cup of tea.
