Salmon n' Bannock - Vancouver, Canada
I happened to find this restaurant one day when I was exploring Broadway area. Mentioned it to a family that was visiting and we decided it's worth a visit.
Luckily we made a reservation as the place was pretty small. A big group would be hard to be seated together here. We were seated at a table which would probably fit four person better. Space between our table and next door was also pretty close. I noticed that later on a table was set outside on the side walk to accommodate a family.
We started with a today's soup. If I remembered correctly it was sable fish soup. It's light with a bit taste of tomato based broth. We then continued with game platter. The game platter had two types of cured meat and a pate served with a bunch of bannock. You may be asking what are bannocks ? Bannock is a flat bread quick bread made of flour common in Scotland, some areas in Britain and Ireland and also variants in indigenous people in North America. My understanding was the bannocks we had were gluten free hence it was pretty dry and tasted like biscuit. I must be hungry because I thought the bannocks were pretty decent with butter.
We also had bison ribs, elk meat balls, bison pot roast and elk sausage. I thought they were all okay. Not too gamey and the flavor was not strong. The sauce used was blueberry sauce for some of the dishes or garnished with blueberries. I guess blueberries were pretty common ?
We ended the dinner with maple wine served with vanilla ice cream. I think the wine was pretty strong as some of us straight away hit the sack as soon as we got home.
